I am slowly trying to phase in using more and more of my own beauty products but it is a time-consuming process and admittedly, sometimes laziness gets in the way! So I am also trying to increase my awareness of the best commercial choices out there. This one was recommended to me by a dermatologist.
Who?
Aveeno was founded in 1945 by two American brothers who worked with a dermatology clinic to create a bath treatment based on finely milled oatmeal. The company has since been taken over by Johnson&Johnson and now primarily sells oatmeal-based creams.
What?
Oatmeal is particularly recommended for sensitive, allergy or eczema prone skin because it is an excellent moisturiser with skin healing, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and itch relieving benefits. All Aveeno body products contain naturally active colloidal (finely milled) oatmeal and/or oat extracts.
The Good
Smooth-textured, easily absorbed and it never makes my skin breakout. It’s also very affordable – usually under a fiver on offer in one of the major supermarkets or chemists! It also doesn’t contain methylisothiazolinone – my nemesis – a commonly used preservative that can cause skin sensitisation.
The Bad
It doesn’t sit that well under make-up, so it can make foundation pill or rub off. Either give it a few hours to absorb or use it without make-up (if you wear make-up everyday, I guess the best time would be when you get in at night).
The Ugly
If I had to search for one, I suppose I would like to avoid plastic packaging more (which is easier when making your own toiletries) – but that is really an industry-wide issue.
Conclusion
Affordable and effective – a great easy choice for skincare.
